Ridge Tail Monitor (Varanus acanthurus)

Distribution: Ridge tail monitors inhabit Northern Australia except for eastern Queensland. They can be found sheltering in ground burrows, termite mounds, crevices and under rocks.

Appearance:  Ridge tailed Monitors get their name from the appearance of there tail. They are sometimes even referred to as spiny tailed monitor/ goanna. They are a Lizard of muscle like all monitors and have a chunky look of strength about them. Ridge tailed Monitors can be either red or yellow both with beautiful dotted patterning on their backs. Adults grow to a length of 50-60 cm

Temperament: Although monitors are typically shy and nervous lizards making them flighty, captive bred ridge tail monitors are known to be able to become very docile with consistent gentle handling.

Feeding: Adult Ridge tail monitor should be offered insects 2-3 times per week, with snacks of raw meat 2 different days a week, Juvenile – Sub Adult Ridge tail monitors should be offered food everyday alternating between raw meat and insects, Hatchling Ridge tail monitors should be offered insects 2 – 3 times per day and tiny bits of raw meat. Insects and food should be dusted with calcium every second-third feed for Hatchlings - Juveniles - Sub Adults - Adults.

Lifespan: Ridge tail monitors live for about 10 years in captivity.

Cost: The cost of a Ridge tail monitor Hatchling ranges from $250 - $400 and Adults from $250 - $700; price varies on size, colouration and sex.
